A Long But Short Journey

Game complete!

This was my first Ludum Dare game I worked on. It's been a while since I published a game and I wanted to make sure I participated in this event. When the topic came out I spent some time deciding on the scope of the project, what type, what style.

I picked a Paper's Please style game since it was mostly UI programming. I wanted to also port it to mobile when I finished it. If the game was mostly UI this port would be simple.

The idea for randomly generating souls turned into a introductory level lesson for for-loops and an exercise in quick creativity.

The steps were simple:
1) Text box to explain rules
2) Soul is created and generated
3) Scan soul to show details
4) Judge it to heaven or hell
5) Repeat quickly to earn more but be careful to not get them wrong

The idea for a shop to spend the money was a double edged sword. You needed money at the end of each day, but the items help you prevent losing more or earn quicker.

After that was just adding the bribes. Since everything was already broken into functions it was easy to add. The whole project came out a lot smoother than I thought it had.

I added some polish and uploaded it just before the 72nd hour. Right on time.

The initial reviews it got it was well received, just a bit hard. I had tested it myself, obviously I knew all of the right answers. It occurred to me that the visual feedback was lacking. There was audio feedback for right/wrong. Just not visual.

Since then I have removed the scan lines that take away from the game experience, added red over the sins when you judge the souls and fixed some UI scaling issues. Overall I spent 1 week total creating and polishing the game.

The last step was porting it to Android since that was half the goal when creating it.

It was a great experience and getting feedback on a game I created helped to improve it exponentially. In college it was easy to get feedback but now its definitely harder. Without the Ludum Dare I wouldn't have gotten valuable feedback.

Overall it was  a great experience. I'm excited to continue making things in the future!
